A Beautiful Conference

Today I was given the daunting task of putting all of the fixtures my company uses in the conference room to be reviewed by the head honchos of the company.

My boss naively told me to pin-up on the north side of the conference room. I told him that I may need a little more space than that.

Flash forward 2 hours later all 3 walls of the conference room are covered in our fixtures. Actually every surface had fixtures taped on it, besides the glass wall. And even that wall had fixtures pinned up on it’s column.

It was pretty overwhelming to see that many drawings all at once… it actually reminded me of something… something from a movie:

it was like a ‘beautiful mind’ but a lot less exciting

Boy is there going to be a lot of work to get done tomorrow.

NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA BUTTGIRL!

I have been seeing some weird clothes lately.

Like really really weird clothes.

And although I believe people have the right to express themselves in many ways, maybe work isn’t the best platform for this.

Now that I work in a more fashion forward business, I have noticed that the clothing too is much more “fashion forward” too.

  • Men Dressed like Duckie from “Pretty in Pink.” Check.
  • Women dressed in lace see-through leotards, with a black bra and business pants. It is like Lady Gaga went corporate.
  • A girl who wears rompers made for 3 year olds– her butt has been seen by all! And this has also inspired me to wipe down the seat in the cafeteria anytime I sit there. No, I don’t want to sit there.
  • Women wearing swimsuit tops with mesh shirts over them. Is my shirt see through enough?
  • And that girl who is trying to make wearing a tarp with unlaced combat boots happen. How does she make it up the stairs? I barely make it up the stairs in flats!
  • And my favorite… the petite man who dresses like a 1990s gangster rapper. Including tied bandanna, It’s like I get to see the dantiest Tupac that could ever exist.

Tomorrow I hope that I see someone dressed like a flamingo or like a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race. In fact, I’m pretty sure of it.

Turn It Up

So we all are a bit strange.

But we are not alone.

Today’s tale in strange is not about me it’s about my dear friend Jimmy.

And to celebrate the fact that he had a new job, I decided to share one of his secrets:

It’s a song that not even I listen to. And I listen to all the cheesy tunes.

For those of you who want to know more about this:

Personally when I’m cleaning I would prefer to listen to a hip song like “Let’s here it for the boy” by Deniece Williams.

Congratulations on your new job Jimmy and your cleaning song.

The Benefits

For some reason architecture departments are like 98% all dudes.

Even at new office there are 15 guys in the department and only one other lady. Now this means you will talk about old comedies, sports, and how the other art departments have dudes who put too much time into getting dressed.

But there are also other things that happen…

And I’m not talking about no line to wait to use the ladies room…

I even got a gel pen that freaking erases. IT ACTUALLY ERASES!!!

Oh, and there is free ice cream on Friday.

Have a good weekend!

Happy Birthday Nancy!

Yesterday was one of the best days in the whole history of things that happen.

It was Nancy’s Birthday!

Yes you may know Nancy from being a doodle in the bar on the right side of the screen, or being deliciously described on my about page. But she’s so much more! She’s my giggling companion, listens to all my silliness, and can make a great meal… but maybe not a cupcake :)

But I must apologize for my tardy drawing. But quite candidly I didn’t get the drawing up  because well, I was too tired from work to get it colored… and well it needed to be colored!

So without further ado:

I almost sorry to tell you that I was inspired by Pocahontas… and if they monitor the internet at my work (which I know they do). They are going to be who is this girl who google searches elevators, what they are serving for lunch, and pocahontas? Who could be that fascinating? Well that  person would be me.

And why is Nancy in a kayak?

In my defense you invited me to kayak next week.

So all I could think of is you and kayaks…

Happy Birthday Nancy!

Have the best year ever!

Cinco de Mayo

Today on this glorious Cinco de Mayo I want to share a simple story.

My new work is amazing and offered delicious churros today. I being a churro enthusiast took full advantage of this. I may be exaggerating but I literally think all I ate was churros today. My coworker said I had the energy and enthusiasm of a chipper squirrel.

I think that is a good thing.

Anyways Happy 5th of May!

Also did you know that it’s Oyster day? I mean while you are throwing back some margaritas and Coronas you might as well throw some oysters your way too!

I’m going to recover from my sugar high now….

p.s.

sugar high induced second doodle about how I imagine Jimmy Cinco de Mayo’s

Keep it together

Clip it all together and keep it in your reach.

I made this last year and I apparently forgot to post it.

I made this during a time when all I was doing felt wrong. And I can tell you it came from frustration and me thinking that I was failing at everything.

Now I am not. I know I am not, and I cannot tell you in words how great it feels.

I am now surrounded by books containing knowledge, and people who are happy to see me. It feels lovely. I rarely think about how I felt at the time I drew this doodle now.

I was anxious. I was nervous. I was wishing to be somewhere else.

Is this all too deep for a Friday?

I hope that everyone can keep it together this weekend… but never forget that there are always paper clips there to help. They could be literal paperclips, binders, staples and what nots… or they could be friends, family, or even Mindy Kaling’s tv show.

I hope that if you need them you find paperclips of your own.

♥Lauren

P.S I have been reading the history of Uppity Women by Vicki Leon and the works of James Thurber. Both are fantastic.

Sunshine, Bathrooms and Forever

I was debating on posting this… so I just bit the bullet and posted it anyways.

It isn’t any secret… I’m in my second week of being jobless.

Starting 2014 with nothing to do in the hours that I usually have filled with drawing weird details and drawings of fireplaces is kinda strange. Did you know that there is sunshine during those hours? Did you know that you can help and visit with a lot of people during these hours? Did you know you can exercise during those hours? And climb rocks and figure out what exactly you can be?  Being jobless for the first time since I was 17 is surreal to say the least, and I have of course been focused on finding it’s silver lining.

Honest to goodness I can say that I think watching “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” two days before I was unemployed was exactly what I needed to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Now I’m not suggesting this is a movie for everyone to see, because I’m known to oversell things I like. And, I don’t know many people personally who can benefit from it’s message, unless they are willing to reflect on their own experiences with honesty and candor… But, I can say that for me, this movie was life changing. I haven’t found a person in actual life who could tell me more about what is about to happen in mine. Walter, to me was more than a fictional character who’s has an incredible imagination, and is charmingly awkward. His years of making others thoughts and rough work into beautiful printed completion was never truly appreciated for what it was, but he did it sometimes with glee sometimes with just need to get it done. I’m not saying that is word for word my existence. But I like that Walter was so dedicated to a job that he knew was going to be lost, and who can really appreciate that?

Well, Walter did. And I thank him for it.

Actually… my  work isn’t about reviewing movies… So, I need to move on.

I’m not going to focus on any of the past but I will say this with some joy…  I no longer have people asking how long my Doctor’s appointments should last– I no longer have anyone guilting me into not getting  annual check ups, or counting how many times I have gone to the bathroom. That I will simply not miss.

However working with a team you trust, is kind of amazing, I will never forget it or them. Those people know who they are.

But life moves on.

And then you watch Meg Ryan movies as you fill out job applications. Because she is a kindred spirit, like Drew Barrymore and Tina Fey. And then you notice things in movies you’ve seen a million times but never thought of before:

Don't you ever get nervous about forever?
I think Meg Ryan character’s must be the wisest of all characters :) And I made this on scratch paper with markers I found during “Sleepless in Seattle.”

And this time I thought about it… Why yes I do. FOREVER.  It’s natural, it’s infinite and at times it’s terrifying.

But when you have hope and goals maybe it isn’t so bad.  I hope to do something brilliant with my forever. And I’m working on it right now.
