Midnight Train to Camelot

My Imagination is still on its trip around the universe. So making doodles has been very hard to do.

I have had to come up with a series that I think I will start tomorrow to power up the good old noggin, and yes it will involve some of the girliest movies under the sun…

Today’s doodle is going into the Lauren’s Big Musical Pun Box… and much like My Hall and Oates joke… it is probably funny to only me and 4 other people… so without ado here’s my totally relevant (if this were the 1970s) Gladys Knight and Pips joke:

pip it up!

Here’s a song to listen to while you stare at my spot on Gladys Knight costume:

And why is there no mash-up on the internet of Gladys Knight as a knight already? I’m disappointed in the other weird people out there.

First I had to make the Significant Otter and now this… come on!

By the Power of Grayskull!

I have been discovering lately that people are having the worst and most boring conversations ever conversed around me.

And since I work in a cubicled heaven… I can take a lot of boring. But for this month I have reached my quota of stuff I don’t want to hear about. I had previously made a post about how to engage me in conversation… but now I’m thinking I should print it out and hand it to people who tell me stories I am not interested in!

Things I recently discovered I don’t care about:
-Purple vests… unless they are on Joseph Gordon Levitt, I’m not interested.
-Social events I’m not invited to… seriously, rude!
-Some other boring third thing. I’m sorry, my brain went to sleep because of the boredom I have been suffering through.

On a doodley side note: I wish I really had all these costumes, because everything would be so much more fun… people would be more concerned that there is a grown up woman dressed like a 1980s cartoon character, and they would not feel the need to tell me a 10 minute story about how they think they should MAYBE go to the dentist.

Can somebody tell me one exciting story?!? Or at least buy me candy while they tell me a sucky one?

Now with Sugar Coating

I was feeling a little more vicious last week than sweet, so I hid in a cave with the Phantom of the Opera until the fed-ex man of my emotions showed up with a new box of sweetness.

And while sitting there with my new freind Phanty I tried to reflect on what I needed in life. What can make this Lauren incredibly happy? What is it that I really need? After watching Season 2 of “Samantha Who”, I discovered a few things I need:
– To let myself realize that I am going to make mistakes, and not to overburden myself with them
-To finish reading Pride and Prejudice
-To take my tests to get my Architectural License.
-Actually go kayaking, hey there Isabel.
-To Do whatever else I please, with a smile on my face.
-Eat a boat load of pastries

And yes sir, that’s all I need.

I’m going to go work on my sugary coating.

The Legend of El Tejon

Jolly Hollers Internet!
I have fallen off the scan-your-doodle wagon. I have a bunch of doodles I really just need to get on their way. I think this one is one of the most culturally important doodles because it shows a turning point in history.

Me, the worst Spanish speaker in recent history, besides my sister. Actually knew something in Spanish my coworker the Dab had no idea about it. (And Dab is the Spanish Master.)

So mark it in the records 6-4-12, was the day I knew more Spanish than… the Dab.

I will celebrate it every year. With joy and fervor. I will commemorate it with one pristine churro. I however do acknowledge that this doesn’t compare with me thinking ghost in Spanish was “El boo Hoo Hoo”.

Let’s go get a churro! Yeah Yeah YEAH!

Happy Tang-iversary!

This weekend was all about Mother’s and such. So shout out to all you mothers out there (that made me feel like I was on TRL). But this weekend also held other precious events like the 30th birthday of the most darling of all Nancy’s.

So today I will share with you 10 awesome facts about Nancy:

1. She is the master of buffets, this girl knows about eating all the delicious foods while still eating ample servings of vegetables, fruits and the incredibly necessary cake.

2. There is no one else I could imagine being fake engaged to on Facebook but her… we like when people congratulate us.

3. Nancy always fights for her rights. Every time there is something that just isn’t right, Nancy will be there with rationality and spicy anger. She is like a Magical Tangier Avenger. If she were a super heroine I think her name would actually be “The Tangy Avenger”

4. When we combine our artistic powers together we either get the best thing ever… or the most terrifying project you have ever seen. There is no middle ground. And no I cannot post pictures of our creations due to an agreement with Nancy, but I can say it does have giraffes.

5. She is a third degree Toast Master. She even as a Toastmaster made a speech about toast, while wearing a toast pin. That is like the matrix of toasts…

6. She is one of the funnest people to giggle around the world with. We were so famously giggle-glued to each other in college that people would interchangeably confuse us.

7. Sometimes if you convince her, she wears color… lately she’s been like a primary color dream.

8. She has no problem being a goof. Please refer to the picture of her in a Mickey Mouse hat holding a dinosaur in the sidebar of this site.

9. She wins awards like crazy. One of the awards she won was being the best project partner I had in school. I think she may be more proud about her work awards though.

10. Nancy may be a psychic because she always has things figured out before anybody else. (Also see #3, because this may be her secret power).

There are so many other rad things to add about Nancy, but I do not want to incriminate anybody. Especially myself. Rock on Tang-a-lang! And have the best birthday week ever!

Toasty Fashions

Since my return to the internet. I have not even come close to catching up on all the things I’ve missed.

But whilst perusing some of the internets I particularly love I found that Jen from Sips Of Jen and Tonic made a fabulous post about Sakura-Con. And where I have not Con’d in a while I still appreciate it. Read her post here.

And Then when I scrolled down the page of her post I feel like I met my destiny. To clarify she did not have a strikingly handsome picture of Jon Hamm posted on her site… what she did have is a picture of a glorious Toast costume.

This Toast Equivalent of Tom Hanks is brought to this site by Jen of Sips of Jen and Tonic

And it was like this kismet moment that only happens in a Meg Ryan movie. I just knew that someday I needed to be dressed like a toast. That toast is my Sleepless in Seattle, it is my Joe Fox.

And that brings me to sharing today’s doodle:

And because she helped me find the defining moment in my toast loving life I give this tribute to Jen (I hope you like it):

Thanks Jen for giving me this new toasty dream!

Thank you for finding the toast of my dreams!
♥ and lollipops,

Friday Threats w/ Lauren

I know it’s such a popular thing to be all “Boo… Hiss” at work on Friday’s… but for some reason I’m jumping on that bandwagon this week. And I’m jumping on that wagon with the sweet hot intensity of a bronze metal pole vaulter…. because this work week has been pretty darn brutal.

Like I’m about to hold a candle light vigil to my artistic principles- kind of brutal.

But what can you do…they can’t take my doodles away:

If today was Thursday I would be shining up my red Candies shoes... for those "Summer Nights"

Here’s to a snazzy weekend!

P.S. Happy birthday Justin!

Architecture with Lauren: Changes aren’t just a David Bowie Song

Today I’m going to share some simple truths about Architecture. The stuff they never tell you when you are paying like $35,000 a year to college, and stuff a professor who wears all black, and drinks only Voss water will never comprehend.

♦ Clients are not notes on paper. Unlike the list of requirements they give you in school…they are real people, and they have opinions.

♦ Just like regular people they have the right to change their minds… and they do so very often. And sometimes while they are telling you about changes, they are changing their mind. (Never get rid of old versions of drawings until it is the final project!)

♦ Clients unlike your professors usually don’t wear berets (never met a beret clad client yet).

♦ Most clients do not want you to re-explain parts of projects that they do not like. Re-explaining your reasoning for putting a 3 tiered fountain and skylight in their ladies room will only make them hate you just a little more than they already do… (because we all know you put that fountain there without them asking you to do so).

♦ You should listen to your clients, because they are paying for a space for themselves… unless you are paying, don’t make a space for yourself. See below for more details.

___________________________________________________

I work with people who like to change their mind… a lot. Most changes are completely  monetary based, like the amount they are allowed to spend on the project was cut. Or because there are finishes, like super sweet marble floors that they want, and now can’t afford to finish the last 30% of the project:

Now, like clients… designers have feelings too. Yes, we’re not all clickity-clackity-computers over here. But most of the time we understand the client’s need to change things in the project:

Now I have already said never make a space for yourself because you will end up brokenhearted. But, we are just people after-all… and truthfully designers do this all the time. Personally I like to put one thing in each project I think is super special… Because to the designer, that extra detail,  special glass, paint color, or even large expensive couch makes everything that you will take out of the project, okay… That is until the client wants to get rid of that thing… and then this happens:

And then we lock ourselves up in our car and cry whilst listening to Celine Dion’s cover of “All By Myself”… and then eat tons of junk food to make it all better (Don’t tell Richard Simmons).

And that was today’s Architecture lesson. I think I should be a professor, and tell these kids before it’s too late…

So Close… yet so incredibly wrong

I’m making this post very brief as I over did it with all those words yesterday.

One of my most endearing quirks* is that I read things like instructions, magazines, and billboards really fast… and sometimes My mind makes up a word or two in the process making thing sound so very strange.  I find myself re-reading things a lot.

For example, this.

And also Fantastic is NOT PRONOUNCED “fanta-stick”.

Here is my latest foray against the English language:

That’s a sub-tile joke!

But in my defense, I work in an architectural office and subway tiling is used a lot… so  it sneakily snuck into my subconscious.

*I’m hoping somebody thinks this is endearing.
